I'll say it again 3 Kove 450 Rally motorcycles started the Dakar rally..... and ALL 3 finished !!!!
This is incredible news and a terrific result for Kove and for Chinese motorcycles . The quality of Kove and these production based bikes is proven beyond doubt.
Of course it's not simply the motorcycles who have performed. The 3 riders have all ridden fast but sensibly despite the pain , longevity, cold and wet. They've shown riding talent , guts determination and also the reserve to look after the machines so they complete the whole race , not just a stage.
The Kove factory have confirmed they are taking what they have learnt and implementing several changes to all the motorcycles on the production line.
We will never forget this Dakar. It's a special one for me. Following Kove made it special.

Expected UK June earliest. We are dealing with the factory direct and also with long distance shipping so please be aware this timescale is our very best estimate. We get updates from the factory every week and we will get the UK bikes as soon as any country in the World. You'll need to relax and just go with it. Your bike will arrive . Delays are the nature of production , refinement of a motorcycle and shipping.
With spiraling Western manufacturing costs, cross border tax's and high inflation the rally market along with the whole Western World of motorcycling has seen new motorcycle prices climb relentlessly. The Chinese have of course been widely immune to this and seem to live in their own economic bubble continuing to be the workshop of the World. Whether its the clothes on our back, the phone and wallet in our pocket and the white goods that wash the clothes on our back, nearly everything we own is made in the East. As they started, their economic climb in the noughties, they did gain a reputation for poor quality, but that was a long time ago and the Chinese learn fast and are eager for market share. The Chinese motorcycle market now dwarfs the combined Western industry by at least 10 fold and this is on the back of computerized industrialisation and high quality.
Kove Motorcycles was founded in 2007 by Zhang Xue a former professional enduro and off road rider. They have multiple factories in the motorcycle Mecca of Chongqing which is the massive Chinese hub of motorcycle and parts manufacturing. They produce nearly all the components in house. So its no surprise that given the founders background that several of the companies motorcycles are aimed at the off road market. All of them have been interesting and useful bikes but one has been eagerly anticipated by Rally riders and enthusiasts for years. This is the Kove 450 rally and its just been released after being in development for 4 years.
Firstly - The styling - Obviously this is subjective but my first impressions of the moulded curvaceous front aspect just reminded me of the friendly Number 5 robot from the loveable 1980's Short Circuit movie crossed with an exotic hand built one off factory work machine that graced the tracks back when accountants weren't in charge or no one was counting. The curves and lines are too complicated and involved to be entirely necessary . The designer clearly got a freehand and was passionate and its clearly not something we'd ever see coming from the block designers of Austria. Theirs don't change shape in a pixellated low res photo.
The diamond-shaped, dual-wing beam steel frame houses a seriously upgraded version of the ultra reliable and bullet proof Zongshen NC450 engine that powers the Fantic Carabello amongst others. However, Kove has fitted a double overhead cam head along with Bosch fuel injection and mapping taking the power to 52 bhp and impressive torque figures of 42nm at 7000 rpm. The power delivery from this liquid cooled 8 valve engine is velvety smooth on the bottom to aim traction but boy does this engine rev. The double cam and mapping has turned the engine from a thumper to what many have described as feeling like a twin.
Dry weight is an ultra competitive 145kg. 2 forward and 1 rear petrol tank take the capacity to a stage completing and continent crunching 31 litres. It is possible to isolate one tank to use as water storage as per rally rules.
21 and 18" wheels provide great tyre choice. Tasko brakes all round which use Nissin pads.
Supplied in 2 levels of equipment. Rally Pro and the Rally regular.
Very conveniently, the Rally regular comes with 950mm or a 910mm seat height.
The Rally Pro comes fitted with a Carbon fiber Roll book / Chart book whilst the standard comes with a better than standard sizeable TFT detachable screen with USB connection. ABS on the regular model but not on the Pro for race conditions.
The level of detail which you will find on these bikes is incredible. The range was recently displayed at the EICMA show in Milan and the rave reviews came from all quarters and have created a sizable chattering among the motorcycle classes. There is no doubt that China is coming head on towards the Western motorcycle market so lets embrace it, take advantage of it and save a bundle of cash at the same time. Look at the prices.

The engine is a tuned counter balanced Zongshen 450 engine with a completely new top end that is unseen elsewhere. This has been tested extensively. The Rally is double overhead cam whereas the normal engine is single. This double overhead cam head combined with mapping high performance exhaust and different manifolds increases the performance. This engine revs but it's very smooth and mechanically quiet.
Zongshen make about 2 million engines a year which is significantly more than than other engine manufacturers. Just do a search on YouTube for Zongshen. The technology and their factory is top drawer. Their engines are in a host of other bikes including Fantic, Norton and AJP. They also produce engine parts for Yamaha and Suzuki.
The Colove Kove rally is designed to be raced. It's a properly tuned, tried and tested bike. It's designed as something that you can take and immediately use in the Dakar or other equivalent rallys. It's very unusual for such a high spec machine to be released. This is not designed for gentle trail riding, although it will no doubt do it very well. This is not a lookalike, it is the real deal. Designed to be raced. The engine and the whole bike have been in development for 3 years whilst tests have been ongoing. We've been waiting for this particular model for this amount of time, but find the delay to be reassuring.
Kove UK will be stocking all parts here in the UK including service kits .Extra general maintenance parts can be supplied with your machine. Parts are reasonably priced.
The Kove is on a whole other level of expertise and exclusivity. It is the real deal. Something that's been tested for years in competition in the desert. Month after month the factory have released desert testing videos. It hasn't simply been tested around the block on tarmac and then rolled out of the truck to a photo shoot.

Kove USA have stripped down the Kove Rally 450 rear suspension in order to check out the measurements and specification. It has been confirmed that the shock is based upon a Showa shock with a 16mm shaft.
